4 Lenham League Home 2 - 1 Won

It was a hot day and the new Under 18 team kicked of against Lenham Wanderers, Captain Lewis Curtis and strike partner Luke Mellela saw a lot of the ball early on and Lewis’s persistence saw Coxheath grab an early goal. The right hand side was most effective as Coxheath began to take control, James Knight in particular linked well with the front men. Coxheath had numerous chances but Lenham’s keeper played well, Coxheath were then very unlucky to concede when just before half-time, a long range shot was deflected over Ollie Howarth in goal.

The second half began well with a lot of Coxheath pressure on the Lenham goal. Luke Wilson and Adam Sugden became more dominant in midfield and it was only some brave goalkeeping from the Lenham goalkeeper, which kept Lewis out. Eventually Lewis pounced on a Declan Fenn cross to force the ball into the net.

With both sides tiring, solid play from the defence kept Lenham at bay. Adam Sugden narrowly missed a long-range effort after the Lenham keeper had come out too far.

Team: Ollie Howarth, Mark McAllister, Daniel Leith, David King, James Knight, Joe Kennard (Declan Fenn 45), Martin Brockman, Adam Sugden, Luke Wilson, Lewis Curtis (Capt), Luke Mellela. Formation: 3-5-2.

11 Hartley De Sales League Home 2 - 4 Lost

Coxheath lined up similar to last week with Luke Mellela dropping into midfield and Declan Fenn starting up front. The match was fairly even with not much goalmouth action for the opening half hour, then towards the end of the first half a long-range effort from a Hartley midfielder beat Ollie Howarth in goal.

The second half started well for Coxheath but we were soon pegged back when a through ball sliced through the Coxheath defence and the Hartley striker doubled their lead. Which was soon followed by a third when Coxheath failed to clear a corner and Hartley scored a scrappy goal.

Coxheath then, despite feeling disheartened had the mouth of the match with Adam Sugden and Martin Brockman combining well to cross for Luke Mellela to convert. However soon after a Hartley player wasn’t picked up at a corner and scored with a fine header. Late on Coxheath scored a second with Luke Wilson getting a scrappy goal from another corner.

Team: Ollie Howarth, Mark McAllister, Daniel Leith, David King, James Knight, Joe Kennard (Adam Sugden 45), Martin Brockman, Luke Mellela, Luke Wilson, Lewis Curtis (Capt), Declan Fenn (Paul Wood 45). Formation: 3-5-2.

18 Holtwood Rangers Colts League Away 3 - 4 Lost

We reverted to 4-4-2 this week, after about ten minutes Paul Wood scored the opening goal, Holtwood had a few chances and we were lucky not to concede.

Holtwood equalized soon after the break, but Paul Wood again put us in front with a low angled shot. Coxheath were unlucky not to go further ahead when Luke Mellela hit the bar. But we were then hit by two Holtwood goals as they pushed forward.

Coxheath kept pressing for an equaliser and it came when Joe Kennard got into a good position in the box, and saw his shot handled by a Holtwood defender. Goalkeeper Ollie Howarth stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it home.

As Coxheath continued to press for a winner they were caught by a quick Holtwood breakaway goal in the last minute.

Team: Ollie Howarth, Mark McAllister (Daniel Leith 45), Declan Fenn, David King, Carl Robertson, Joe Kennard James Knight, Adam Sugden, Luke Wilson, Lewis Curtis (Capt), Luke Mellela, Paul Wood. Formation: 4-4-2.

9 Loose Lions League Home 7 - 2 Won

Coxheath reverted back to a 3–5-2 system because of a popular vote and took an early lead when Patrick burst through their entire right hand side before slotting home. Loose got a goal back from a badly defended corner. However soon after Luke Wilson with a fantastic run and then Patrick Stevens again from a corner put Coxheath back in front. Unfortunately Loose pulled a goal back when Coxheath back line were defending to deep and lost all communication.

Early in the second half from James’s corner Daniel made a late near-post run judging it perfectly, before scoring with a bullet header right into the top corner! (Guess who wrote this match report!).

Paul then showed great awareness in front of goal to grab an amazingly quick hat trick early in the second half lobbing the keeper twice. Paul then should have had a penalty as their keeper brought him down. However the referee made up for it by giving Coxheath about 10 free kicks in dangerous areas in the closing stages, however they were all wasted. Really Coxheath should have scored many more goals but it wasn’t the case.

Team: Paul Wood, Mark McAllister, Daniel Leith, David King (Joe Kennard 70), Patrick Stevens, James Knight (Martin Brockman 55), Declan Fenn (Ollie Howarth 80), Adam Sugden, Luke Wilson, Lewis Curtis (Capt), Luke Mellela. Formation: 3-5-2.

23 Ridgeways League Home 2 - 3 Lost

Coxheath lined up against the league leaders and unfortunately fell behind through a well-placed header into the top corner. Then soon after they got their second. However Coxheath continued to play well and were rewarded when Martin burst through and played a neat one-two before slotting home. It was no more than Coxheath deserved.

The second half continued in much the same fashion. About 10 minutes in Paul was played through and scored a cracking goal, smashing the ball in off the crossbar. Then for much of the second half after this point Ridgeway applied much pressure without really creating much. Coxheath defended superbly. Then in the final minute Ridgeway got a free- kick wide on the left, crossed the ball, it wasn’t cleared and the ball fell to a Ridgeway player who slotted home. It was a bitter pill to swallow because we felt we deserved much more.

Team: Lewis Curtis (Capt), Mark McAllister, Daniel Leith, David King, Marin Brockman, Carl Robertson, James Knight, Joe Kennard (Adam Sugden 45), Luke Wilson, Paul Wood, Luke Mellela. Formation: 3-5-2.

26 Sittingbourne Lions League Home 4 - 2 Won

Coxheath lined up against Sittingbourne in a hotly contested match. It was Coxheath who started off the brighter with David King scoring an audacious lob from 35 yards out, a goal equal in cheekiness as it was skilful. The Coxheath players celebrated the goal in style as deserved by the strike . However, the game became deceptively even and Sittingbourne replied to the Coxheath goal quickly by creating a goal of their own. With the Coxheath players shocked Sittingbourne were extremely unfortunate not to score a second.
Coxheath were back on top soon after half-time with a goal from Paul Wood, a typical finish from the striker as his great positioning created a chance out of nothing as the Sittingbourne keeper palmed the ball into Woods' path.
In the second half, Coxheath were once again pinned back by a wondrous free kick attempt by Sittingbourne who had shown great commitment to pull it back from being behind in the game on two separate occasions.

Coxheath were back in front after Knight produced a shot at goal which the keeper could only parry towards the on-rushing feet of Paul Wood once again.
Coxheath were soon further ahead as Sittingbourne began to tire in the later stages, due to excellent dribbling skills shown by Martin Brockman which was followed up with a low cross to Oliver Howarth. Oliver attacked the ball creating a scramble in the goal mouth and the ball was eventually put in by a battling James Knight to secure the 3 points for Coxheath and Farleigh.

5 Lenham Wanderers League Away 2 - 1 Won

The game began with Coxheath and Lenham both having ten players each, with the winds blowing and the pitch cut up, due to the dry weather, the game was set to be a tiring one.

The opening section to the first half was highly dominated by the home team but well defended. Many throw-ins were won by Lenham in dangerous areas but Coxheath knew how to defend them well and build counter attacks of their own.

Formation wise, our midfield were in for a tough time. Lenham had started with a 4-4-1 strategy where as Coxheath adopted an original 4-3-1-1 formation with Martin Brockman in the holding role behind the main striker Ollie Howarth. With Paul Wood and Adam Sugden injured and away, the entire team had to work twice as hard to cover the loss.

Lenham made the first breakthrough, delivered in from the right side of midfield to be met by a controlled shot parried away by the Coxheath keeper, But before Martin Jones could pounce on and gather the rebound, the Lenham attack swiftly put the ball away, despite Patrick’s best efforts to throw his tall frame in the way, 1-0 to Lenham.

The following 15minutes saw a more attacking minded Coxheath, with runs from Mark, Patrick and Martin causing difficulty amongst the defense of Lenham. With Luke Wilson and Dave King expanding the width of the forward play, a goal was destined to come, and did in the form of a mis - placed goal kick. The midfield pushed into a narrower shape to defend the Lenham goal kick, in doing so, Dave King intercepted the kick and managed to set Ollie Howarth through with a perfectly timed long ball. Ollie forced the ball beyond the reaches of the oncoming keeper to equalise in great fashion. 1-1.

Minutes later the post was hit from a through ball placed by Martin Brockman, to be almost converted by Ollie but not quite.

Lenham could have easily gone ahead moments later when a cutting through ball was brilliantly placed into the right winger's path, but Luke Melella read the danger and made an excellent timed crunching tackle to send both the ball and the player flying.

Half time was reached at 1-1 with all to play for, a gutsy performance gave a lot to build on for the second period.

The second half began, and immediately Coxheath were on the back foot. Lenham went out to hit Coxheath early, but this wasn’t to be. Many strong challenges were needed from Dan Leith and Luke Melella, and they did not disappoint. Mark McAllister, even though suffering from illness fought through commandingly with an excellent show of tackles, runs and simple defending.

Out of an otherwise dull opening to the second half came two very good chances for both teams, both originating from the corner spot. A corner delivered by Luke Wilson resulted in Ollie’s first time effort just scrapping the top of the bar. Lenham’s response was a deep corner whipped in to the danger area, only to see the ball fly back from where it came as the shot missed the far past.

The winning goal came about from a defensive error on the behalf of the Lenham Goalkeeper who kicked the ball straight into the heel of Ollie, he quickly turned round and found Martin Brockman who put the ball away to win the game.

Late on J.K got a knock and therefore Coxheath were down to nine men for the final 10 minutes, Melella suggesting a formation change to 1-4-4 to hold on for a deserved 2-1 victory.
