11 Staplehurst League Away 1 - 1 Draw
Coxheath U14s started their 2005-2006 campaign playing an away match against Staplehurst. The team line-up is basically the same as last year except Warren Millen has joined the team as Goalkeeper. Last season’s keeper Jonathan Cooke opting to play in defence this year. Also making a return to the team was Alex Packham.

The first half was very even, with both teams trading runs from end to end testing the defenders. First chance came when Tom Gravenell struck the cross bar with a shot set up from a long cross from Peter Thew, but was not able to capitalise on the rebound. Tom Ferguson was kept busy making runs on the right wing but was unable to get a shot on goal. New Goalkeeper; Warren Millen was tested by probing shots from Staplehurst on a couple of occasions. Joe White came on as substitute for Alex Packham who received an injury. The half time score being     0 – 0.

Ten minutes into the 2nd half Staplehurst took the lead with a goal set up from a corner kick. Resolutely, Coxheath set about removing that deficite. Ten minutes later they were rewarded with an equaliser. Adam Osborn had intercepted the ball in mid-field, passed to James Mercer out on the left who ran up the wing for 15 yards and passed the ball to Tom Gravenell, who was intercepted by Staplehurst defenders but was able retrieve the situation and score from an acute angle decisively defeating the goalkeeper.

Staplehurst pressed on to chase down a winning goal but a solid performance by the defenders; Lee Longhurst, William Edwards, Chris Feltham and Jonathan Cooke in the last ten minutes locked out any chance of them scoring again. The final score remained 1 – 1. Man of the match was awarded to Jonathan Cooke.

Team Manager Nigel Mercer said he was happy with the performance for our first outing of the season.

18 Wateringbury League Home 4 - 1 Won
Coxheath U14s Played their first home match today at Cornwallis School. Due to illness and family commitments were only able to muster ten players. As was proved last season that when faced with the situation of only ten men the lads raised their game and knuckled under to give that little bit extra.

The first half gave us quite a few chances but we could just not get the ball into the back of the net. Wateringbury are always a tough side to play, but we seem to get the measure of them very quickly and were able to control the midfield play.

Our first goal was almost a repeat of last week. An interception by Adam Osborn in midfield, was played up to James Mercer who had plenty of space around him to sight up the goal mouth and launch one of his power shots. The Wateringbury keeper was able to get a hand to it and punched it out. Tom Gravenell was there to receive the ball and chipped it in but not before it glanced the cross bar. For the last ten minutes of the first half we were down to nine men as Alex Packham took a knock on his knee and was unable to
continue. Everyone consolidated the situation and was able to lock Wateringbury out of the chance of an equaliser. The half time score remained 1 – 0 to us. The second half started with Wateringbury determined to bring the scores even again. Coxheath’s defenders worked hard to stop the ball getting passed their line and clearing to midfield. Our second goal came after a free kick by James Mercer on the half way line was planted squarely in the goal by Tom Gravenell.

Wateringbury was still applying the pressure but were caught offside on numerous occasions such was their enthusiasm and determination. Goal number three came from a run by Peter Thew on the right wing defeating two opponents on the way, accurately placing the ball for James Mercer who’s shot on goal hit the cross bar, rebounding for Tom Gravenell to claim his fourth goal in two games.
The second half saw numerous knocks and hard tackles, with the stopwatch being paused to allow attention to the injured. Without having any substitutes available and legs getting tired Coxheath were battling hard to stave off advances from Wateringbury,  who were pushing strongly and were rewarded by a goal for their perseverance to make it 3 –1. One last charge by Coxheath gave us a fourth goal after Alex Packham broke free of marking by Wateringbury players to gain distance deep into Wateringbury’s territory, crossing the ball to just outside the goal area which was chased down by Tom Gravenell who planted the ball into the back of the net. Final score 4 – 1.

The whole team gave a creditable performance and considering they were a man down made it even more pleasing. Wateringbury played tough but fair, but on the day Coxheath came through shining. Well done lads. Tom Gravenell was awarded Man of the Match for his sterling efforts to chase down the ball and convert into goals. Other notable performances came from William Edwards, James Hopkins, Chris Feltham and Jonathan Cooke in defence and Warren Millen in goal who controlled his area with skill.

25 Borough Green Jrs League Away 0 - 2 Lost
This was our first outing to Borough Green who have come down from the 1st Division. It was apparent from the kick off that we were playing a team that had first division experience. Borough Green started the more confident team. It was with strong determination that Coxheath dug their heels in to show their opponents they were not going to have it all there own way. With only 5 minutes to go to half time a break by Borough Green gave them the lead. Half time score was 0 – 1.

Six minutes into the second half Borough Green scored from a corner. As the second half progressed Coxheath found their feet, keeping more possession of the ball but were unable to change the score-line in their favour. Tom Gravenell and Peter Thew made several runs from the half way line to within striking distance and were unlucky not to be able to plant the ball in the net.  Final Score 0 – 2.

Man of the Match this week was awarded to James Hopkins for his sterling efforts in defence. Willis Homden made a return to the team after breaking his leg during the summer holidays. Defender Jonathan Cooke found himself taking on a mid-field role after Alex Packham was injured in during the first half. Also need to mention Joe White playing in midfield, and Will Edwards playing in defence, both contributed solid play.

2 Parkwood League Home 3 - 5 Lost
Parkwood overpowered us today on our home ground. They had 2 goals on the score sheet within as many minutes of the start of the game! The difference appeared to be the amount of sheer stamina and a commitment to tackling and winning every ball possible. The final score was 5 – 3 to Parkwood. Three of their goals came from corners where the ball was place quite expertly in front of the goal, to be headed or walked into the goal unchallenged. Not one of our better performances!

Thomas Gravenell added two goals to his tally, and Tom Ferguson put the other goal on the scorecard. Unfortunately, not enough to turn this match around. We missed opportunities to bring the score level when we had drawn the Parkwood keeper off his line but shot wide from close range. Notable effort from Joe White for a solid performance in mid-field, and Thomas Gravenell who seemed to cover the whole pitch throughout the duration of the match.

9 Sittingboune Cup Home 4 - 0 Won
A change in strategy was the order of the day, and subsequently our performance this week was a far better effort than last week! The only problem was actually getting the ball into the back of the net. Give credit where its due, Sittingbourne’s goalkeeper made a lot of good saves. The first half was spent primarily in our opponents half of the pitch, that’s not to say we had it all our own way, with Sittingbourne making some inspired mid pitch runs. For all the efforts, it took until the 30th minute before James Mercer was able to take the score to 1 – 0.

Keeping the pressure on in the second half, Alex Packham put the ball in the back of the net twice, winning the ball in the air on both occasions, the first headed in from a corner kick. His second came from a goal mouth skirmish after a loose clearance following another corner, was chipped back towards the goal for Alex to head in. Tom Gravenell made the score 4 – 0 in the closing minutes of the game.

Man of the match was awarded to Joe White, who was so close to scoring himself, played a solid role in mid-field. As ever Tom Gravenell displayed his speed and stamina by putting himself about the whole pitch. Overall, the team was more settled this week and can all be pleased with the way they played.

Into the next round of the Challenge Cup we go.

16 Park Regis League Home 1 - 3 Lost
Goal Scorer: Tom Gravenell.

The final score today certainly did not reflect the run of play. Although Park Regis had two very tall, powerful lads up front who were able to use their height and agility to confound our defenders we had more possession of the ball and played the better tactical football. We had more than our fair share of shots on goal but were just unable to get the ball in the back of the net.

The first half started well enough, sensible marking and solid footwork by the defenders and mid field players shows a considerable improvement over previous weeks. Five minutes into the game a mid-field interception by Jonathan Cooke passed the ball forwards to the feet of Tom Gravenell who was perfectly positioned well forward in the opponents half of the pitch to turn and shoot to goal defeating Park Regis’s keeper. First score on the sheet to us. We came unstuck in the 25th minute when Park Regis made it  1–1. Five minutes later an error by midfield let Park Regis score again.

The second half did not start well and within 3 minutes Park Regis had increased their score again to make it 1 – 3. From then on, the lads dug deep into their resolve in an attempt to get back into the game. Time after time our opponents had to concede corners as we kept up the pressure, but we just could not get the score back in our favour.

Well done to Adam Osborn as our stand in goalkeeper. Considering he hasn’t been asked to do the job since early last season, he kept goal as best he could. Chris Feltham had a tough job sizing up to the Park Regis forward with attitude. Joe White had a tough match in mid-field. Man of the match was awarded to Tom Ferguson who made a spirited effort throughout the game, laying on numerous passes and nearly scoring himself.

30 Paddock Wood League Away 4 - 0 Won
Goal Scorers: 1st 6 mins, own goal (attributed to Chris Feltham). 2nd 14 mins, own goal (attributed to James Mercer). 3rd 20 min, James Mercer, 4th 30 mins, Alex Packham. This was our first visit to Paddock Wood’s home ground. It was the first time I have been to any ground that has advertising boards on display, and we were presentedwith match day programmes! With a brisk breeze blowing down the pitch, having won the toss, we elected to play with the wind hoping to gain the advantage in the first half. It was certainly the right decision. We claimed our first goal in the 6th minute off the back of another well placed corner kick from James Mercer, Chris Feltham pressed forward to head the ball, but the keeper got to it first and turned away from Chris, only to let it go into his own goal. Paddock Wood conceded a free kick from just outside the penalty area, giving us goal number 2 when the ball was deflected off a defender into his own goal. Paddock Wood came near to scoring soon afterwards only to be thwarted by Warren Millen’s pre-emptive actions to close down the angles and take charge of his goal area. Paddock Wood then gave away another free kick from a blatant hand ball which was blasted straight into the goal by a James (Lampard) Mercer special. The next ten minutes would see runs by both teams. Our fourth goal was put in the back of the net by Alex Packham, who had received the ball in mid-field, held possession while weaving past the defenders, drawing the goalkeeper off his line and lobbing the ballover the keeper’s head into the goal. The decision to choose ends at the coin toss would be a pivotal tactic in this game as it gave us a 4 – 0 advantage at half time. The second half saw Paddock Wood come out all guns blazing, knowing the breezeblowing down the pitch was now in their favour, and for the first fifteen minuteswere able to control the game and came close to scoring. After that things settled down, end to end play ensued, and there was plenty of action by both teams, but neither side were able to produce any goals. This victory was definitely a team effort. Solid ball control and accurate passing, and renewed self-belief helped to keep everything together this week. Everyone worked hard in all positions. Man of the Match was awarded to Willis Homden for sterling work consolidating the mid-field play. Those lads not mentioned this week can also beproud of their effort, they certainly contributed to the to the final result.

13 Bearsted League Home 4 - 5 Lost

Goal Scorers: Tom Gravenell – 3, Alex Packham - 1.

There were 3 main factors contributing to today’s result. Firstly, Bearsted were more hungry for the win to lift them from the lower ranks of the league table. Secondly we wrongly interpreted Bearsted’s position in the league as an easy win. Nothing was further from the truth! Thirdly and finally Club politics.

As is traditional on Remembrance Sunday, a minutes silence was observed by both teams before the match commenced.

Coxheath were slow to get going allowing Bearsted to score early on, putting us on the back foot. Alex Packham opened the scorebook for us with an interception of a loose goal kick from Bearsted and blasting the ball back into the goal to make it even. A handball by the Bearsted keeper outside his area gave us the lead from a free kick by Tom Gravenell planted into the top right corner of the goal mouth. First half ended 2 – 1 to us.

In the second half the score then went to 2 – 2, then 2 – 3. Another solid strike by Tom Gravenell brought the score back to 3 – 3. After numerous fruitless runs in Bearsted’s half, Tom Gravenell earned his hat-trick when an intuitively constructed run by Tom Ferguson and Peter Thew, got the ball forward to Tom G without incurring an offside flagging, for him to plant the ball into the goal. Believing we had the game sewn up, we started easing up, which allowed Bearsted back into the match, stealing 2 goals in the last 5 minutes. Shame really, as we probably played some of our best football considering the circumstances we found ourselves in.

Adam Osborn was awarded Man of the Match for solid consistent play in mid-field. As ever, Tom Gravenell’s positive attitude and high stamina levels were evident. Tom Ferguson and Peter Thew worked well in supporting him.

The following comments are by the writer and may not be endorsed by the team manager.

Even before the match had got underway, we found ourselves in the bizarre situation of being forced off our home pitch, and made to play on the second and smaller pitch at Cornwallis through no fault of our own! It was difficult to get any continuity of play, as the pitch appeared crowded and would have been more suited to the age group below. Without consultation with the U14 Manager, The under 13 team had been given our pitch because they felt that they could not play at their home ground at Oldborough Manor because of the overhanging trees. Last year both the Colts and ourselves shared that pitch and made do with our lot. As we share this pitch with the Colts, it will be interesting to see if they are treated in the same way when they have home matches. It does not send the right message to the lads and has now set an unfair precedence. We have been on this pitch since the beginning of the season, As the newcomers to the venue the U13’s should have the smaller pitch. Apparently size of goal takes priority over size of pitch! They will be measured next home match!

4 Staplehurst League Home 4 - 2 Won
Goal Scorers: 1st 5 mins, Thomas Gravenell. 2nd 25 mins, Thomas Gravenell. 3rd 33 mins, Peter Thew. 4th 50 mins, Alex Packham. This week sees the start of the return matches and today was our second time of playing Staplehurst having drawn 1-1 last time at Staplehurst. We had our minds set on winning this game as it will put us up a place or two and we were going to give it our all. It was almost perfect playing conditions for the game with no wind and a clear sky. Having lost the toss, we started the game with Kick off. Getting straight to work, we pressed forward, passing the ball well and ending up with a throw to us near Staplehurst’s end taken by Chris Feltham. A great throw just into the box and Alex Packham got a head on it to pass it to Tom Gravenell, whocasually headed it into the back of the net. Having been the first ones to score, we had a boost of confidence that led to goal number 2. With Alex Packham playing on the right wing of midfield, we gained the ball and gave it to Alex, only for him to be fouled by one of Staplehurst’s defenders. This gave us a great chance for another goal. Tom Gravenell was elected to take the free kick. He took it well, soaring through the air, from well outside the penalty area, into the back of the net above the reach of the goalkeeper. By this time, Coxheath were in their stride keeping possession and not giving up on lost balls. Jonathan Cooke played a large part in controlling midfield, keeping the ball and creating opportunities with the strikers. Also in midfield Willis Homden and Joe White, both gave good account of themselves. The third goal came a few minutes before half time with Peter Thew only just scoring from a goalmouth scuffle. Chris Feltam threw in the ball and there was neither a clearance nor a shot, except for Peters, which only just rolled over the line. The referee did not see it but the linesman put up the flag and it was accepted as a goal.In the few minutes before half time Coxheath continued to push on. At the end of the first half, the score was 3-0 to Coxheath. Staplehurst started the second half, keen and enthusiastic to get back a few goals and they did just that. After a series of unfortunate events, Staplehurst managed to score in the 42nd minute bringing the score to 3-1. Determined to keep the game theirs, Coxheath kept their heads high and scored in the 50th minute; Alex Packham, who had been trying very hard on the right wing, creating most of the chances that led to goals, scored the goal. The ball waspassed up the wing and Alex, on his first touch, blasted it from outside the penalty area into the back of the net bringing the score to 4-2.In the last minutes of the game, both teams worked very hard to try and score that last goal, but neither team scored before the whistle was blown. The victory was well earned this week. Everyone worked hard in doing their jobs and our goalkeeper, Warren Millen, did exceptionally good job in goal, saving some difficult shots, and coming out to intercept the over the top long shots.Man of the Match was awarded to Alex Packham for working hard in the midfield.

11 Wateringbury

League

Away 3 - 1 Won
Goal Scorers: 1st 7 mins, Thomas Gravenell. 2nd 49 mins, Thomas Gravenell. 3rd 61 mins, Thomas Ferguson. On arrival at Wateringbury, we were greeted by a foggy, frost covered pitch. Wisely, they had decided to leave the marking to the last minute to ensure that the line paint did not rest on the frost, otherwise it would have been very difficult to make line calls or determine where the keeper’s could come out to.Wateringbury have always given us a run for our money, and this match was no exception. It is pleasing to come away at the end with the three points this week as all the lads put in a stirling effort. The score does not reflect the amount of chances we had throughout the game. Notably, there was a shot on goal from outside the penalty area that hit the crossbar, a couple of inches lower and wouldhave sailed into the back of the net. There were two or three close in shots that went wayward that should have been put away. This week was probably the best team effort so far this season, all players manned their stations with diligence. The defenders this week played a solid tight line thatwas to frustrate Wateringbury throughout the game.Tom Gravenell opened our account in the first half. The score remained 0 – 1 almost to half time, but Wateringbury found a way past the defence and made the score 1 – 1. We then went 1 – 2 up from another good run and goal from Tom Gravenell from out on the left flank to cut inside to the middle, catch out the Wateringbury defence and put the ball solidly into the back of the net. Tom Ferguson then to contributed to today’s tally of goals, when the ball hit the cross bar and rebounded back into play he was there to collect it and blast it back to make it 1 – 3.Alex Packham and Peter Thew ably controlled their own areas, testing our opponent’s defences for breaches. Joe White, out on the left midfield had the job of closing off passes from Wateringbury’s midfield to one of their forwards who appeared to be a main kingpin to their game.Defender William Edwards tookon the role of holding up Wateringbury’s incursions while the rest of the defence repositioned themselves to intercept any cross goal passes. Jonathan Cooke played in midfield for the first half, but played in defence for the second half to replace Leigh Longhurst. Goalkeeper Warren Millen showed maturity in judgement, knowing when to stay back and when to come out and stop the long ball over the top.Notable commendations this week go to James Hopkins in defence, I don’t recall seeing a Wateringbury player get passed him the entire match. Willis Homden playing in central midfield was solid in intercepting and feeding the ball back up to the front before Wateringbury had the opportunity to create a run through our half.Everyone raised their game today, and it shows what we are really capable of. Team Captain Chris Feltham displayed the standard of play he expected of everyone today and was awarded Man of the Match. Congratulations lads a justifiably proud result.

8 Parkwood

League

Away 2 - 4 Lost
Goal Scorer: Thomas Gravenell - 2Our first outing of the New Year! Unfortunately it showed. Before the match everyone appeared up for a good game, and sporting a full squad, we felt confident we had the strength and power, but as it got underway we looked rather rusty having not played for the best part of 4 weeks.By half time it was 3 – 0 to Parkwood. Opportunities were there, as Parkwood didn’t have it all there own way, but we could not get the ball in back of the net.Tom Gravenell added two more goals to his season’s tally in the second half. Parkwood scored again. We then seemed to come alive for the last 15 minutes of the match containing Parkwood’s advances and showing good ball control, but were just not able to turn the score around in our favour. We came close on quite a few occasions when we had got behind their defenders, but either had no power left in the shot, or it flew high or wide of the mark, including two free kicks from just outside the penalty area.Having played so well in our last few matches, the lads really need to put this one out of their minds, be positive and move on to work on winning their next couple of league matches to be assured of a decent position in the table.Man of the Match was awarded to Joe White who worked hard putting himself about the pitch, trying to contain his opponents.

15 Leybourne

Cup

Home 1 - 8 Lost
Goal Scorer: Thomas GravenellHaving got a bye through to the quarter final of the challenge cup, we found ourselves drawn against the first division side of Leybourne, It turned out to be one of the toughest matches we have played for a long time..While the final score may have complimented Leybourne, we were very pleased with the way all the lads performed today. We knew that Laybourne were going to be a tough nut to crack, but they had to work for it. We hit the cross bar on a couple of occasions and also had a couple of close but wide efforts. By the end of the first half Laybourne were 0 – 4 up. 1 of those was from a Penalty. It was good to see that heads and shoulders did not drop as the scoreline mounted as the lad knew they were playing a team vying for league championship in a league above us. Our team Manager encouraged the lads to learn from their experiences of playing a division one team.In the second half we were able to make more breaks, one of which culminated in Tom Gravenell’s well timed goal.. For the last 15 minutes of the match we had about 85 to 90 percent of the possession, we were just not able to find a way past their defences to affect the result. Most of Leybourne’s goals were the result of corner kicks we had to concede, that we were just not able to clear effectively.Although it was a tough match, notable commendations must go to James Hopkins in Defence and Peter Thew on the forward line, who managed some long runs but just not able to get close to scoring. Man of the Match was awarded to midfielder Adam Osborn for solid consistent play.

22 Park Regis

League

Away 10 - 2 Won

Goal Scorers: Thomas Ferguson – 3, Thomas Gravenell – 3, James Mercer – 1,

Alex Packham – 1, Peter Thew - 2.

To conclude an away match with the 3 points would have been pleasing enough,

but to have done so in such fine form and with an abundance of goals, is

very satisfying indeed.

Maybe the writing was on the wall when having won the toss and elected to

choose ends, Park Regis kicked off and immediately lost possession,

intercepted by Alex Packham, who advanced forward around two Park Regis

Midfielders, passed the ball to Tom Gravenell, who had made space on the 18

yard line, ran forward to the 6 yard line and planted the ball in the goal.

All this was less than 30 seconds into the match!

And so it went on! Goal number two came fifteen minutes later. Park Regis

then rallied to make the score 1 – 2. We then replied to take it to 1 – 3.

Park Regis took the score on to 2 – 3. Five minutes before half time we

scored again. Half time score locked on 2 – 4 in our favour.

From the kick off of the second half we totally controlled the run of play

which was to see a plethora of goals tally up on the score card. The goals

were scored from a variety of situations; close in, corners, headers,

un-intercepted runs and a free kick. All players raised their game today.

Solid ball control, accurate passing, heading and tackling, made this game a

pleasure to watch. This was entirely a team result and because of that I

believe it is worth noting all the players who participated today. Forwards:

Tom Gravenell, Peter Thew and Tom Ferguson. Midfielders: Alex Packham,

Willis Homden, James Mercer and Adam Osborn. Defenders: Chris Feltham, James

Hopkins, Will Edwards, Leigh Longhurst, Joe White and Jonathan Cooke.

Goalkeeper: Warren Millen.

At the end of the match Team Manager Nigel Mercer said that it was the best

football he had seen the lads play since he took over running the team.

Confidence and self belief hit a new high today. Man of the Match was

awarded to Peter Thew who not only scored twice himself, but was generally

in the thick of it from the off.

29 Paddock Wood

League

Home 1 - 2 Lost

Goal Scorer: Peter Thew.

Congratulations to Paddock Wood. Their first win of the season was well deserved.

What a difference a week makes. You would have thought that we should still be on a high from last week’s outstanding game. On the contrary, it was probably one of the most lack lustre performances we have produced all season.

Paddock wood took the lead only a couple of minutes into the game. It may have been that the lads thought that Paddock Wood was going to be an easy win, and they were taken by surprise how quick and able their opponents were. Ten minutes later, Peter Thew brought the score to 1 – 1, after a scramble in front of Paddock Wood’s goal, was able to push the ball into the back of the net. The remainder of the first half stayed at 1 all, although Paddock Wood did have more possession of the ball.

The second half started proceeded well enough with neither side able to make inroads. Time after time Paddock Wood made runs down the wings, and cut in at the 18 yard line. They had two large lads who were able to make dents in our defence. Fortunately for us they were unable to convert those runs into recordable results. 12 minutes from the end, Paddock Wood made scored again when a bodged clearance gave the ball back to one of their large forwards, allowing him to barge pass the defence and slam the ball into the back of the net. The last few minutes of the game was spent down at Paddock Wood’s end, as they conceded 3 corners on the trot but we were not able to capitalise on the situation and either draw level or take the lead.

Stand-in goalkeeper Leigh Longhurst kept station as best he could, throwing himself down on the ball at his opponent’s feet on numerous occasions.

Whether it was because of the state of the pitch, complacency, the chilling wind blowing strongly down the pitch, stamina levels, or some other contributory factor, our passing, ball control and tackling were nowhere near good enough on the day.
